Ipads in Art Education- What I am seeing
What you have started:
I have changed my classroom management to stricter guidelines regarding the iPad. Over the summer I made these guidelines:
1. No iPad for music during work time. (I felt that kids were getting distracted by them, messaging, finding music, watching shows and that they were not as efficient as they should be.)
This was already negotiated on the first day. We decided Monday- Thursday was a no iPad day and that I would play music over the speakers by request. Fridays would be free music day and they can bring their headphones to listen to music.
What I have observed thus far is that it is working well so far. The kids follow the rule and I am going to continue to take data on the chatter and art conversations that occur when the radio is on in comparison to the silence of Fridays when they are working with their headphones. Both types of days have shown productive work process. I am now going to listen closer to the conversations they have with each other. Not just about art, but to keep that social aspect of school. I explained to them that not everything needs to be messaging and that having out loud conversations are still important. I will continue to observe and get some hard data for next time.

Our school is a 1:1 iPad K-12, are you teaching in a school district that is similar? It's interesting to me to read your policy and then hear our Art teacher discuss how she lets them listen to music on their iPads daily. I'm not here to say one way is better than the other, it's all about what works for you and your class. I agree with your out loud conversations. Here we are in modern society teaching simple conversational skills, crazy if you really think about it! I am interested in reading more about this topic and what your data is presenting next time. Would it be alright if I share your blog with our Art teacher?
ReplyDeleteCindy,
ReplyDeleteOur is a 1:1 iPad 7-12. We got them last year and they kind of just gave them to us and told us to use them. Last year was when I let them use them everyday and decided to switch it up this year. They get 4 days not iPad (unless we are using them for other purposes) and Friday is their personal listening day. How long has your school been 1:1 iPads? Feel free to share the blog with whomever you like. I will also be comparing apps in the future. The one I need to report on next is Keynote vs Google slides in use as a replacement for power point off of the computer. Lots of learning together with the kids and I when it comes to this technology.
Hope your school year is going well:) What is your research on?
I like that students are having conversations while they work. I teach in Pelican Rapids and one of the major obstacles is finding a way for our ESL population to make gains in their language. This year we are purposely focusing on students using the language, not the teachers. It's quite powerful to teach students to use academic as well as social language as the youth spend a majority of their time plugged in instead of one on one conversing.
ReplyDeleteThat is very helpful, I have one student that is ESL and is still developing the language. She has progressed a lot with talking to me and with students. We don't have any ESL teachers in our district so at this point we are just trying our best.
DeleteHello Lindsey! My name is Monica Thompson, I am part of the Pelican Rapids learning community. I am a technology integrationist for a service coop in Fergus Falls, MN. I am very intrigued on how you are using the iPads in your classroom. Other than listening to music, what are some ways your students are using their iPads in your classroom?
ReplyDeleteMonica,
ReplyDeleteSome of the things we have done with the iPad thus far is used it to take portrait pictures for a grid enlargement assignment ( then they can zoom in with their iPads to look closer at details), used Adobe Sketchbook to draw sketchbook assignments that are normally hand drawn, compared google slide and keynote when creating and presenting Power points, I have had them take surveys about their iPad sketchbook assignments and have played draw something on them. I have many of my assignments on a google site making it easy for them to retrieve artwork examples, worksheets, resources, rubrics and so on. I have done some flipped you tube videos in the past for maternity leave, but they were more for the sub than the students. The students could use them, but now I have switched grade levels for teaching so it has pretty much gone to waist.
Lindsey! It was good to see you at conference on Sunday! I really enjoy hearing what others are doing with iPads, especially in the art classroom because I do not teach art. I like that your used YouTube videos as a flipped classroom for a maternity leave.
