What the students are seeing, saying and/or feeling about my classroom;
I thought I would make a little survey for my kids to help me collect some data. This data is from my Drawing and Painting 1 class. We do a large grid portrait and this year I had them use their iPads along with their smaller paper grid. Students print the pictures, draw the grids and do the math to enlarge their picture on bigger paper. The iPad was used to look at detail and contrast along with their smaller grid picture as a resource. Sometimes larger pictures can get blurry. Here are my results.

Lindsey that is great, that you surveyed and posted results. Were you surprised by any of the results, or is it what you were expecting?
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great post about the 21st Century Teacher! You incorporated the use of the iPad perfectly and I really liked how it was more of a "tool" rather than the focus. What were some of your student's thoughts and reactions? Were the results what you expected?
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing the technology we have today, and how we can creatively weave it into our curriculum. Was this the first time you used the iPad for this particular assignment and if so, did you feel as if the students' were more engaged?
ReplyDeleteThe students in Byron are very comfortable using their iPad in class. So, comfort wise it was what I would expected. I was happy to see that it was a choice to be able to use it as a resource. With my rule of not being able to use it a Monday-Thursday unless as a PLD (personal learning device) I did not see the students misusing the iPad as much as usual. I also liked that some students did not need or want to use the iPad, which made it easier for me to see they were doing their work and there was not a possible distraction. The ones that did use the iPad tended to have not as crisp of picture to start with or they just liked being able to zoom in and look closer at the details. When I talked to some of the kids the reaction was 50/50 if they used the iPad or not. We talked about detail and contrast and those two topics was the determining factor if it was needed or not. I do feel that some probably were more engaged because it took the mystery out of the details they were trying to create. I would give them the choice again to use it for more clarity, details and contrast. It was a nice tool to have.
ReplyDeleteOh, as an added note I have seen kids taking pictures of their work so they have a photo copy or can post it on twitter or facebook. Ultimately, I would have the kids take pictures with their iPad of all their work and then have them put it into their Drawing and Painting Eportfolio. Then they would have an archive of all their HS work that they can always reference if needed for resumes, college visits and so on. Our HS set up the Eportfolio for every class and every students....I just need them to use it!
Interesting to see the results! Do the students have an ePortfolio for all their classes or is that something you do for your classes? What site or program do they use for the e Portfolio?
ReplyDeleteMonica,
DeleteThe ePortfolios were made by our tech. building person for all classes in the High School and for every student. We used google to make the ePortfolios. So, to clarify each student has an ePortfolio for every class that can be taken in the High School.
What an effective strategy! I'm not surprised that many students liked having the crisper photo to work from and zoom in on; that is something I would do myself. Will you give them the choice to work from their iPad for future reference photos then? I agree with Cindy, you are an excellent 21st century educator!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I did give them the option to use their Ipad for the next project which was a painting. They had to use a specific famous artist style and then change the work to be their. So, if they liked "Starry Night" they had to change the direction of the lines, subject matter, colors, etc. , but cold still use the impressionism style. The iPad especially helps with looking at color as a reference.
