Action Research Analysis of Data

Action Research Analysis of Data I have found that the analysis of the data shows that the iPad is great motivational and educational tool. It makes researching and using the internet very convenient. Having a 1 to 1 program has created a mainstream tool among teachers that helps each teacher help each other. Having everyone using the iPad instead of multiple devices have mainstreamed the learning of certain apps. As well as having a self serve site of where the apps that the school paid for is housed for students to use. This is the 2nd year we have had the iPads and there has been a huge learning curve for me from year 1 to year 2. I have also found that having a determined plan for the use of the iPad in your classroom was extremely beneficial. The iPad is only a tool and does not need to be used all the time. I also found that needing to have the kids unplug was very important and changed the dynamic of the classroom and the community of the classroom I found that the iPad worked very well as a communication tool with students regarding email, websites, grades, assignments and so on. The more items I make digitized for examples, assignments, descriptions, rubrics and so on the easier it is to communicate expectations. So when asked if the iPad is Helpful or Harmful? My answer would be helpful!

  1. I'm sure it has been quite reaffirming knowing that your data research has been as successful as it has been. Kudos to you! Do you have any suggestions for those of us who don't have a 1 to 1 program?

  2. Hi Tanya,

I know that our classrooms started with a pilot of about 5 iPads, then classroom packs and then finally 1 to 1. Before we went to iPads the students were able to use their phones as PLDs, Personal Learning Devices. This took a lot of discretion and there was a lot of issues for misuse. Ipads have had issues as well, but different ones such as snapchat. Phones is what we used and we have a high majority of students who have smarts phones and/or internet at home. Smartphones can use apps such as Kahoot, research the internet and be used as a calculator for math. I sure there is many more things you can do with a phone, but I would need to double check the apps I researched to see which ones are available for phones.
I looked you up and saw that you teach third grade, which I don't know how many 3rd graders have cell phones! I would suggest having work available on your website that is easy for students access- rubrics, assignments, reading, sites, resources, youtube videos, etc. This helps with absent students and differentiated instruction. It can also help bring your towards the flipped classroom is that is something you wish to ever explore.
I understand it is not the same as having each student with their own personal device, but there are a few things you can do. We did also let the kids bring in their own iPads, Chrome books, Kindles, etc. , but one to one is the most consistent and probably the easiest way to adjust to new technology in a school.

  3. Thanks for all the great suggestions. And no there aren't any cell phones in 3rd grade. They're still trying to keep track of their boots, mittens and snacks!
